#AshesToFire #Lent : Where are you in the Wilderness?

Mark 1: 1-3

1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.'”

Mark 1: 9-13

9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

God sent a messenger ahead to prepare the people’s hearts and minds for receiving His Son Jesus. This messenger was John the Baptist. John had no desire to “fit in” but was there to do his job, calling the people to prepare and make their paths straight.

After Jesus baptism the Spirit sent him into the wilderness for 40 days of testing and tempted by Satan. Even through this time He was protected and taken care of by the angels attending him.

Which story do you see yourself best fitting in during this season of your life? Are you the voice in the wilderness preparing the way? Or are you being tested and tempted in the wilderness? Either way rest assured that you are not alone and that the Father above is watching over you and protecting you. Each of us has probably found ourselves in both situations from time to time.

As believers and receivers of Christ we are now called to be “the voice in the wilderness” calling out for others to turn their lives around and make their paths straight. We are called to prepare the road before him ministering to the people that we have contact with and helping to prepare them to receive His blessings through His Word.

But sometimes we find ourselves wandering the wilderness needing the voice to call us out. During these times of testing we must remember who we are dealing with. Satan is the father of lies and will say/do anything to get us to believe him and turn from the saving grace of the Father above. Just as Jesus had heavenly helpers so do we! We have fellow believers to help us decipher the lies, the Holy Spirit who guides and directs us, The Word which helps us know the truth, etc… The list of resources could go on, but the trick is that we must be willing to use them and reach out to others during our wilderness time.

It sometimes seems like after every blessing comes a testing. Perhaps because we let our guard down when we are on top of the mountain and stop being careful about where our feet are planted. Satan uses even small things to make us doubt the big things.  Remember during this Lenten season who speaks the truth and keep your guard up against the tricks and lies Satan will use to try to make us miss our step and fall.

Lord, thank you for your word and how it speaks to us, guiding and directing us to your truth. Help us to use the resources that you have provided to strengthen our faith and keep us firmly planted in you. Lord thank you for your blessings and help us through our testings. Amen
