1 Thessalonians 4:11
And to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you.
Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.
I’m adding Matthew 6:1-4
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
· Mercy to the needy is a loan to God, and God pays back those loans in full.
· “Be especially careful when you are trying to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won’t be applauding. “When you do something for someone else, don’t call attention to yourself. You’ve seen them in action, I’m sure—’play actors’ I call them— treating prayer meeting and street corner alike as a stage, acting compassionate as long as someone is watching, playing to the crowds. They get applause, true, but that’s all they get. When you help someone out, don’t think about how it looks. Just do it—quietly and unobtrusively. That is the way your God, who conceived you in love, working behind the scenes, helps you out.
Why do you give? Do you give to truly help others or do you give to help yourself? Are you a selfish giver? God makes it very clear that we have the responsibility to give aid to those around us, those that He puts into our paths. But we are to do so with the right motives. We are not to help others to bring glory to ourselves but to bring glory to Him and him alone. When we give to others we are to give as if they were God themselves. We are in fact helping Him, we are giving back to him what is his anyway.
He sees our hearts and knows why we are helping. Make sure that it is out of love for Him not out of love for you! Then he will give us our reward!
Lord, help us to see you in others. Help us to give for your glory alone not for our gain but for yours. Help us to give unselfishly and to honor you. Amen
