Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades. The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God!
It is so easy in today’s culture to get caught up in the fashion whirl wind. To get ourselves to buy into the appearance race. My young girls 4&5 are already worried about how they look and dress. While I do think it is fun to play in the fun fabrics, make-up and hairstyles, we must make sure that we are giving as much care to our heart.
I had a conversation with my 5 yr old about ugly hearts the other day. We have begun to notice some behaviors that are not pleasing to us or God. I sat down with her and explained that even though you can be pretty on the outside we can make ourselves look ugly to others and God because of how we act and choose to treat others. It doesn’t matter how many layers we put on of cosmetics and trends if our actions are harmful or ugly. Beauty is more than skin deep. God looks at our heart and judges us by what it looks like.
I find this verse rather comforting in my life currently. When I was younger I put much more stake in my appearance than I should have and now that I am older and it is quickly fading I find it comforting that God does not judge on appearance but on actions. My current health conditions as well as having three children have taken a toll on my appearance and I have become self-contentious about it. I am almost fearful about anyone seeing my scars or knowing that all is not well. But as I begin to heal physically I rest assured that no matter what I look like God still looks at me as his beautiful creation!
What about you? Are you putting to much stake in appearance and not enough on your heart? Remember that you (and I) are beautiful without the mask!
Thank you Lord for creating us in your image. Help us to llok at ourselves and others as more than skin deep. Help us to see past the mask and into the heart and truly lover each other as you love us. Amen
