She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.
Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.
It is not about what you can make but doing the best you can with your talents!
At first I wasn’t sure what to write about these scriptures. At face value they say that the Proverbs 31 woman makes things and sells them. Well great something to add to my ever present “free” time, right! So now I am supposed to get up early, stay up late, plant a garden, serve my family, feed the poor, make my husband a popular and successful man among the community, and run a garment factory! (OK I’m being sarcastic Ha-ha) I’m overwhelmed!!!!!!
But when you dig a little deeper and add in Proverbs 10:4 we can see that it is not about what you can make but about doing the best with the things that you have. It is about doing everything in your power to help provide for your future as well as your families. It is about spreading the financial burden amongst you and not letting it rest solely on one person’s shoulders.
I understand that it is not always possible or advised to have both parents working, especially outside the home. I am a SAHM but do bring in some income from operating a small child-care. Some other ways that I contribute to our cash flow are through small sewing projects, selling pies/bread occasionally and working as billings/bookkeeping for our rural water board. But that is not always possible for others. But even being frugal with the money our spouses bring home is a form of “income”.
The real message is not to become lazy and have idle hands but to always be thinking of ways that we can contribute to the good of our families and those around us. What are some hobbies or talents that God has given you that you can use to benefit your family financially? Do you have a special talent for crafts? Or maybe an eye for antiques that you could open a booth at a local flea market? Or maybe you are a coupon clipper? Whatever you do do it to the glory of God and he will let you reap the rewards!
Lord, thank you for the resources that you have given to us. Thank you for the talents that you have bestowed upon each of us as individuals. Help us to use these things to your glory and the benefit of our families and your people. Help us to discover and develop our skills that you have given us. Amen
