You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and their children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
Your job is to speak out on the things that make for solid doctrine. Guide older men into lives of temperance, dignity, and wisdom, into healthy faith, love, and endurance. Guide older women into lives of reverence so they end up as neither gossips nor drunks, but models of goodness. By looking at them, the younger women will know how to love their husbands and children, be virtuous and pure, keep a good house, be good wives. We don’t want anyone looking down on God’s Message because of their behavior. Also, guide the young men to live disciplined lives. But mostly, show them all this by doing it yourself, incorruptible in your teaching, your words solid and sane. Then anyone who is dead set against us, when he finds nothing weird or misguided, might eventually come around.
Oh what a beautiful challenge we have before us! We are to be models for goodness, plain and simple. We can’t teach our children to love God with their everything or lead others to a healthy walk with Christ if we are not claiming it and showing it. We are to speak out on things and teach appropriate doctrine, but more importantly we are to live it!!! Mind, Body and Soul LIVE IT!
We might think that all we do as housewives is clean, laundry, organize, cook, shuffle, etc… But through this study I have been encouraged and challenged to not just get the “chores” done but to SERVE and by that service be an example of Christ to past, present and future generations. We are called to be good wives and through this we are ministers to our husbands who then take that love for Christ example and show it to their co-workers. We are called to be examples of Christs love and commands to the older women so that they can teach those who look up to them about godly living.
Because we claim Christ our behavior must be Christ-like. We don’t want anyone to doubt his message because of our behavior. So we must make sure that our lives are disciplined, incorruptible, solid and sane! That way if anyone is looking for an example of why not to serve and love God they can’t find it. We are to be like a mirror and when they look at us all they can see is a reflection of Christ and His love.
One of the main reasons people site as their defense to not become a Christians is that we are hypocrites. Well quite frankly sometimes we are and that is exactly what these verses are warning against. We must live so that they can not find a reason not to commit to Christ. We need to rise up and stop giving the secular world ammunition to shoot down Christs message. WE NEED TO GET OUT OF HIS WAY!
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace and love. Help me to abide in you so that there is less of me and more of you. Help me to not just say the words but to live them. Lord, don’t let me get in the way of your work. I give you the glory, honor and praise! Now and forever Amen.
Prayer of St. Francis!
