Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor.
Humility is the fear of the Lord, it wages are riches and honor and life.
Fear-Of-God is a school in skilled living – First you learn humility, then you experience glory.
The payoff for meekness and Fear-of-God is plenty of honor and a satisfying life.
Humility: not proud or arrogant; modest, submissive, courteous & respectful.
Honor: fairness or integrity in one’d beliefs or actions; a source of credit or distinction; high respect, merit or rank.
No one likes the person who always glorifies themselves by bragging about this or that. But we all know someone who fits that description. You just cringe when you hear their mouth open because you know it is going to be all about their latest and greatest. How do you see that person? Is it with respect and honor or is it with disdain? Is it someone you voluntarily want to surround yourself with? How does it make you feel about yourself? Remember the answers to those questions the next time you are tempted to boost about something you have accomplished.
These passages of scripture are clear about the relationship between humility and honor. They elude to the fact that in order to receive true honor and praise you must first be humble! When you lift others around you up instead of yourself God gives you the honor. His opinion should be and is the only one that has any long term weight. It shouldn’t matter to us the opinions of others but His opinion of us. He is the one who raises people up in his timing. Sometimes we get our heads so pumped up with hot air from those around us that we start letting ourselves soar into the clouds of “all about me” or down in the dirt thinking we are worthless. We compare ourselves to the expectations of this world instead of the one to follow.
So the moral of the story is to remain humble and modest in our actions, behavior and yes even appearance. We need to stop worrying about how we look and act in today’s “society” and begin to stack ourselves against the great Saints that have gone before us.
Lord, help us to remain grounded in you. Thank you for giving us honor when we deserve it and guidance when we need it. Thank you for your word which gives us examples of true role models. I give all the glory, honor and praise to you. You are the only one worth of it! Amen
