Scripture Reading – Luke 3:1-6
S.O.A.P. Reading – Luke 3:5-6
Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all people will see God’s salvation.
John was sent to prepare the way for Christ. He was preaching the redemption message of “repent and turn back to God for He is coming soon”. He was warning the Jews that what they had waited for so long was about to happen. Those people were going to see God’s salvation in the flesh.
We to have a purpose similar to John’s. Just as he was preparing the way for Christ’s coming we must prepare the way in our lives and the lives of others to meet Him. Not only meet him here and now, but, at his 2nd coming. I love how the message translation says “The parade of God’s salvation”. It will be a truly joyful time when we meet with him in his kingdom. A time of celebration. But for some the opposite will be true. They will be faced with the cold hard truth that they missed it. There will be grief and sadness and eternal damnation.
The hard truth is that we will all live forever. We will all pass away and spend eternity somewhere. The choice that we have is whether we will choose to embrace God’s grace and forgiveness and join him at the parade of salvation into his kingdom. Or, will we choose to reject the message of repentance and be eternally regretful. Will we miss it?
God is calling us today just as he was when John was his messenger to set things right. To fill in the valley’s of our lives, break down our mountains, make our paths straight, and smooth out the roughness. He is calling us to turn back to Him, as a nation, as a state, as a city, as a church, as a family, as His creation. He longs for us to return to his mercy.
Lord, thank you for your Son. It is only through embracing His sacrifice of love that we are able to return to your loving presence. Help us to rid our lives of the junk that gets in the way of you. Help us turn back in repentance to you. We know that it starts as a choice within us and has the ability through our obedience to transform our world. Helps us to be like John who spread the message of your coming without thought of how it may make us look to others. Help us to lay down our pride and obey. Amen
