Fasting: It’s a Spiritual Discipline!

Scripture Reading – Luke 5:33-39
S.O.A.P. Reading – Luke 5:34-35

Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.”

Fasting is a time of sorrow not celebration. The disciples were in the midst of Jesus and it was a joyful time full of learning and celebration. But soon he would be gone from them and they would need to learn to seek him in a new way.

Fasting is a time that we give up something and replace it with seeking him more diligently in prayer. The disciples would have their time to fast, but not when the Lord was in their presence. We however do have a place for fasting. We can use this spiritual discipline to seek him in a new and real way.

Another reason Jesus was rebuking the others was because of motive. They were fasting to be seen as righteous. We are clearly instructed to fast in secret. To wash our faces and apply oil so that it may go undetected.

We are in the beginning of the Lenten season where many fast and pray more diligently than other times. Make sure that you are not doing it for your glory and appearance but to draw closer to the Almighty!

Lord, help us to seek you and draw close to you. Help us to put you first and not ourselves or what others think. Help us to give you the glory, honor and praise. Help us to use this season of preparation to seek your will for our lives. Amen
