Almsgiving is one of the three special things that we do during Lent. We should really be giving to others all year but in this season we couple our sacrifice with giving. You may hear a lot of people talking about what they are giving up for Lent. Yes, It is good to practice self denial during this time. But, where do those resources then go? The answer should be almsgiving.
Did you know?…The practice of giving up meat during the Fridays of Lent was to save money and then donate that money to the church or other charity to help those who are less fortunate.
What are you “giving up” for Lent? It may be soda, candy, or something else. Use the money or time that you have saved to give to others. One way to do this is to create an almsgiving jar.
Decorate the jar with names of those that you are wanting to pray for this Lent. Also draw pictures of things that will remind you of Jesus and his ultimate sacrifice. Every time that you give something up place in the money that you have saved. At the end of Lent donate that money to a food bank, clothing closet, soup kitchen, shelter, or other charity.
