MaxScholar Reading Intervention Programs ~ Reveiw

MaxScholar Reading Intervention Programs Review
Ever since we switched the older girls to a computer based curriculum, our youngest Ashlee has wanted to do “computer school” too. We have tried the main stream advertised curriculum (you know…the one with the mouse) but it fell short and she got bored quickly. Then, this review came up on the TOS Review Crew and I jumped at the chance to grab it!!!!! What is it you may ask? It is MaxScholar Reading Intervention Programs by MaxScholar.

She is little but we decided to go ahead and try Kindergarten this past school year. She new all her letters and sounds going in so we thought she was ready. She picked right up on math, but, struggled in her attention span when it came to reading. Nothing would hold her attention and keep her engaged long enough to really learn how to put the letter sounds together.

We had decided that she needed another year of Kindergarten before moving up. As she puts it, “She is so smart she needs to do Kindergarten twice!” with an enthusiastic tone. haha But, thanks to the MaxScholar programs and some summer work that she is excited for that may not be the case!

MaxScholar Reading Intervention Programs is a fun interactive way to keep kids engaged and excited about reading. It is specifically designed for struggling readers. It specializes in those students with Dyslexia, ADHD, processing issues, and any student with learning difficulties.

There are two main levels of MaxScholar’s program, the K-2 level and the MaxGuru. Basically, any kiddo from preK to grade 12 can benefit from it! PreK’s start with Phonics and work their way up from there. I really liked that it gave her a little fun test to gauge where she was currently at and ten adjust her level accordingly. MaxPhonics also covers blended sounds, sight words, and some writing. Once the phonics are cover the next step is the MaxReading level. In this level, they begin reading, learning more words, and play games.

The Phonics section is most of what we have been working with. It uses 3 types of learning to mater the letters…Visual, Tactile, and Auditory. It goes through what the letter is and then what the sound is. In tactile, it shows how to make the letter, then they trace and then create it. In Auditory, they practice the sound.

After every few letters, a game is played so that you can see what they have mastered before moving to the next letter group.

The first level of reading… Ashlee likes the section that I consider pre-reading. They give her a picture, and then ask her questions about it. This really helps her get ready to make mind pictures of the books she reads and remember what she has read.

She has had a blast learning with MaxScholar and I can’t wait to see how far she has come by the end of summer!

Science Shepherd – Introductory Science ~ Review

Science Shepherd Review
It’s review time again! Our regular school year is almost over which means it is time to narrow down our summer lesson plans. We usually focus on math, English, literature, and writing during the normal school year. Then in the summer months we do history, social studies, and science since those curriculum’s seem to be a bit more flexible in scheduling. This year we will be using Introductory Science Level B by Science Shepherd.

Science Shepherd is a curriculum designed by a homeschool dad for homeschoolers. I like that! Many of the other curriculum out there are designed for the classroom setting and have activities that may be hard to incorporate into a small group of students. In turn you pay for more than you can use.

The goal behind the Science Shepherd programs was to give the parents confidence to teach their children science regardless of their own background knowledge in the subject matter. In turn allowing upper level students to remain in the home and still receive top notch education!

The material uses updated technologies, such as, videos, pictures, and graphics. The books and videos allow students to work through the material independently or as directed by the parent. It is easy to understand and fun to use!

Most importantly, it is all written form a Biblical Perspective! Which makes it safe to use for your eager learners.

Courses available include…

Life Science

Introductory Science – with workbook choices level A (ages 6-8) & Level B (ages 9-11)

Creation Science

Science Shepherd Review
I chose Introductory Science with workbook Level B. One thing I really like is that they offer both levels of workbooks. That makes it so easy to teach one lesson but to customize the work material for multiple age levels. I can teach my kindergartner and my two fourth graders at the same time.

Introductory Science is a complete science course for ages 6-11. Topics covered include: creation, geology, biology, oceanography, meteorology, and much more. The course is designed to take 35 wks to complete but can be easily adjusted to fit a different schedule.

Each week is then divided into daily work. The daily work includes a 2-5 minute video that covers the material for that day. Then they have workbook pages and/or hands on activities to accompany that days lesson.Videos are available on-line for a 12 month period. However, if you run out of time you can purchase an extension to the time for $5-$15. That is nice to know since most often our time frames and schedules get pushed around quiet a bit here.

The workbook Level B includes a wide variety of activities. I will talk briefly about the activities for week 8 since you can view a sample video f that week here. Week 8 is Earth Science : Geology.

Day 1:Volcanoes –  After watching the introductory video, the student then reads the bible verse for the week (Psalm 104:5). Then, answers 4 questions about the video followed by a “erupting volcano” experiment also available in the video section.

Day 2: Ice Age – Another interesting video followed by questions.

Day 3: Glaciers – Video, questions, matching activity, and a vocabulary word find puzzle.

Day 4: Earthquakes – Video & questions

Day 5: Erosion – Video, questions, and another video activity/experiment about what erosion looks like. Then a review of the entire week.

I really like how easy yet informative this program is. It is full of fun activities and questions to help the kiddos remember what they have learned through the videos. I also like how it takes the preparation and lesson planning off of me so that I can enjoy learning with the kiddos instead of stressing about missing something important. It is a great way to keep learning through the summer months but not fell pressured to  keep up with a tight schedule. Each days lessons are short and sweet so if we miss one it isn’t a big deal to just double up for a day of two.

I look forward to using this during the upcoming break!

Kwik Stix 12 pk from The Pencil Grip, Inc. – Review

Kwik Stix The Pencil Grip, Inc. Review

I am in LOVE with this product that I had the privileged of reviewing!!!!! It has made my must have list for school supplies!!! What is it????? It’s Kwik Stix 12 pk by The Pencil Grip, Inc.

Kwik Stix The Pencil Grip, Inc. Review
The Pencil Grip, Inc. company may sound familiar to you. They supply many useful items for writing including “The Pencil Grip” which is the #1 recommended ergonomic writing aid.

But they offer other great products too like Ergo Stylus, textured pop beads, gripables cutlery, plus school and office supplies.

For this review I received a 12pk of Kwik Stix. I had never heard of them before came up. But, now I can’t imagine not having them in the classroom.

Kwik Stix are Tempera Paint sticks that dry super fast. They kind of remind me of glue sticks only in paint form.

Kwik Stix The Pencil Grip, Inc. Review

By using these Kwik Stix’s you can have the look of paint without the mess. You don’t need water, brushes, paint shirts, etc… You just pop off the cap and paint away. They dry in 90 sec. and once dry provide a paint -like finish. They work great on all types of surfaces like paper, cardboard, wood, ad canvas. They are also washable, so if they get used in not so good places like walls, tables, and arms it will wash right off.

We have been using the 12pk with regular color, but, they also come in neon and metallic finish. They also have class packs of 96 piece for 8 sets of the 12 pk or a smaller 6 pk.

Kwik Stix The Pencil Grip, Inc. Review
My favorite thing about this product is how mess free it really is. I love art time but used to get frustrated with the supplies that needed dragged out for painting and then the clean up. A cup of painty water always getting spilled somewhere inconvenient. With Kwik Sticks my girls can paint anytime without help getting out supplies or cleaning up messes.

I also don’t have wet paint papers laying all over the house waiting to dry since it drys so fast. Some of these type of products have claims that they can’t back up. But Kwik Stix is the real deal!!!! It makes painting fun again.

Here are some of our projects…

My youngest used them everyday. She liked to use them on her Math Papers!

We used them in our learning time when we studied about Spring weather. They made great rainbows.

Our letter books got a make-over with them too.

May baskets looked great with some Kwik Stix art.

Really, the only wish about them that I have, is that they could come in a fine point selection since my kids liked using them so much. It was hard to write and be able to read since they are about the size of a glue stick. But, I really love using them and letting them create with them. We will be ordering the other sets for next year’s school!
