Week 3….Check!

In Our Homeschool This Week…
Week 3 is done and checked off! We had a great week!

Monday we had normal school in the morning followed by a cook out with some friends. In the evening we had 4H and Audrey finally got voted in since she will be 7 before the next meeting (official 4H age).

Tuesday was a full day of school followed by the first dance class of the fall season. The girls teacher for the last 2 years isn’t teaching this semester but I have full confidence in their new teacher. They had a great class and really focused in on technique. I’m excited to see how their skills develop in the new advanced class!

Wednesday another full day of school followed by Church activities in the evening.

Thursday normal day and a very needed evening at home relaxing.

Friday we finished school early and had a great time visiting with a friend and her sweet babies. I had an unexpected day off from my childcare business which gave us some good quality down time!

Not a whole lot of excitement but a lot of adjusting to the new full fall schedule. We did work on Grandparents day cards to celebrate the upcoming appreciation day Sunday. The older girls drew cards with a picture of them with their grandparents then wrote why they are special. Little created an apple themed card to keep in line with her tot school theme. The girls also are having their 1st sleep over tonight!!! It’s a fun girls night full of pizza, cookies, American girl, barbies, hair chalking, duct tape bracelets, screams and giggles!!!!!

A Peek At Our Week: Solar Science!

In Our Homeschool This Week…
This was our 2nd week back to the swing of things here at the Hoggatt Homeschool. During the day time that is…. Our full schedule will actually begin next week when we add back in our monthly 4-H meeting, weekly dance class and Wednesday night church activities!

In Bible we have continued our study of Genesis. Last week we stopped at the 7th day of creation and this week continued on through the fall. I have really enjoyed this time each morning making what can sometimes seem to be just stories come alive. I am trying to help the girls understand that Adam and Eve’s bad choice has consequences for us today just as their bad choices may have consequences for others also. Along with the fact that God’s love is bigger than any bad choice we have or will make. He had a plan for each of us! That plan involves Jesus!!!! Although we can’t get back into the garden God’s love meets us where we are and bring us back to him!

Science has seamlessly line right up with our Bible study so far! We spent most of the week learning about the sun. Genesis 1:14 says, “God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years.” What better way to illustrate the concept that the sun gives us a way to track dates and times then to actually track the time with the sun! So….A Sundial we made! SEE HOW HERE!

We also talked about other ways that the sun helps us and created a solar oven. The girls fixed supper with it on Thursday night….even if it was just hotdogs! haha While not incredibly efficient it did help show that we use the suns heat. I however prefer the quicker microwave preparation!
Friday is test day for our week. This Friday happened to be BIG test day with a phonics, spelling & math test for each of the olders. It was also the final Friday of the month of August. In celebration I planned a “Creation” themed lunch! A great way to wrap up our creation study and move forward to Cain and Abel, as well as celebrate a good test day / end of month. My goal is to try and do a “Friday Fun Food” every other week but at least at the end of the month! Get details of our creation lunch here!
Other lessons went as scheduled and all in all I would call this week a successful week!
In Tot School This Week…
The little continued working on her Apple unit. She is really liking doing “school” with her big sisters! We read “The Little Apple Goat” and she enjoyed coloring a picture of and apple and a goat. She also did her do-a-dot A page and a fun apple stamping craft!
From The Hoggatt Homeschool Kitchen…
Last week I mentioned how a friend of mine gave us a ton of zucchini….Well I ground it up and put most of it into the freezer for the winter months but I couldn’t resist making these yummy Lemon Zucchini Muffins with Lemon Glaze!
Around the “Triple-A-Farm”…
Our weather has been very unpredictable this summer. We spent most of it battling rain and soggy ground. Now it is hot and dry which is more like our typical summer. The soy beans are growing again in the fields and the corn is drying up getting closer to harvest. However, my chickens are not liking the climate change swings. We have had low egg production all summer and this week some very interesting eggs!
Giant “dinosaur” egg…regular egg…mini egg!

I am privileged to be one of the new contributing writers for Homeschool Survival! This week I shared encouragement for when things just aren’t going as planned in our homeschool. Believe me Homeschooling isn’t all rainbows and sunshine sometimes! Check out this article and other encouraging posts from HS moms at

Weekly Wrap-Up: And We’re Back!

It has been a few weeks since I have done an end of week update. Lots of hustle and bustle happening here at The Hoggatt Homeschool. We have been traveling for doctors appointments and other craziness. However, we are settling back down into some routine and schedule. Our full blown “school year” schedule is beginning to form and we will have the evening activities back in swing by the 1st part of September. We did start our school schedule this week and have had a fantastic 1st week back!

Last week we kicked off our “Not” Back to School with a visit from the back to school fairy. You can catch up on that fun here!

We also had our first day photos! I created some really cute “Pintrest” inspired 1st day shirts! make sure to check them out here! I’ll spare you the photo montage again, but, I did want to share another one of my three little ladies!

I can’t believe how much they have grown up! In fact we did some re-arranging in the house and no longer have a nursery. It was a bitter sweet moment! Audrey (2nd grade) has moved into a room by herself and Alyssa (1st grade) and Ashlee (pre/k) are now sharing. All by choice!
1st time in a big girl bed!

Top Bunk Baby!!!!

As I mentioned earlier, we have resumed school lessons. The break helped tremendously. We are approaching this year in a more relaxed and up beat manner. So far so good! Our Bible study and science have linked up nicely this week. We started our Genesis study with Creation and Science space study with stars.

Other lessons have included the normal spelling, reading, writing, math etc…
Another “goal” I have for the year is “Tot School”. Ashlee will turn three in November and wants to be just as big as her sisters. She wants her school time also! So her and the two boys I keep will be doing activities right along with us. One project they completed this week was a “Getting Bigger Book”. It’s a take on a 1st day of pre-school / all about me book. Check out the link above for your free printable!

The Tot’s will also have themed learning packs. We are starting with this FREE (yes, can you tell I love free) Apple Pack from 3 Dinosaurs
Ashlee is so proud of her “Apple Color Book” she made!

Everyone got in on a fun game of “Ten Apples Up On Top!”
Just make poms out of red yarn and secure with green chenelle stem…You got Apples!
See what you can do without letting your apple drop!
Mama even got a little time away this week with a Mom’s Night Out and Homeschool Planning meeting!
The kitchen has been hopping around here this week. A friend of ours dropped off a few 5 gal buckets full of zucchini and cucumbers. Pickle Party Time!!!! I canned lots of dill pickles and okra pickles. I shredded the squash for freezing but did turn some into some super yummy lemon zucchini muffins and a chocolate chip zucchini cake. Stay tuned for all three of those recipes! But this week’s feature recipe was “The Best Meatloaf EVER!” It is sure to be a family pleaser!
That’s about all from our week! I hope you have all had a just as fantastic one as we have!
